The boss of French nuclear giant Areva, is blaming Finnish electric firm TVO for the significant delays in building a nuclear reactor in Finland, reported the Finnish media.

Finnish broadcaster MTV3 said that it had obtained a copy of a letter which was sent by Areva’s president Luc Oursel to TVO’s board chairman Timo Rajala, where Mr. Oursel, it is stated, said that the two companies had “no normal business relationship”

Areva together with Germany’s Siemens, is building the nuclear plant for TVO in Olkiluoto, western Finland, however, the project has now fallen more than three years behind the original schedule but both parties are blaming each other for delays as well as the projects ballooning costs.

Last month world energy expert Areva, reported that the company’s January-June net profit fell 79% to 161 million euros (235 million dollars) following a charge of 550 million euros it took for more delays in Olkiluoto.

The nuclear reactor at Olkiluoto has been re-scheduled to start producing energy by the second half of 2012, and a judgement regarding a dispute between Areva, Siemens and TVO over compensation for the delays is pending at the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce.

Cyprus on form for first wind farm

October 2, 2009 by · Comments Off

Cyprus’ first wind farm has gotten another step closer following a ground breaking ceremony in the Orites area of Kouklia and once operational the project has the potential to produce 82 MW from 41 wind turbines, producing almost 10% of the island’s total energy generation capacity.

The energy project will also contribute to the government’s target of producing 13% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020 – With the wind farm having a capacity of 82 MW in its first phase, and an approved capacity for 140MW when complete.

The wind farm will be the first private sector power project in Cyprus benefiting from the new 20 year fixed rate tariff that has recently been approved by the government of the Republic of Cyprus and the European Commission.

Akis Ellinas, Chairman of DK Wind Supply made comment that at a time when climate change is reaching the top of political agendas, wind energy continues to be the only advanced technology which is ready and able to deliver renewable power on a large scale. He continued by saying that Cyprus is not one of the windiest places in the world, but is still committed to moving toward renewable energy, which consequently makes them work harder than others.

This project becomes the county’s biggest investment in renewable energy and will be the first wind energy investment in Cyprus, representing an investment amounting to €170 million, it is said.

Scottish Government to Invest in Cheaper Energy

October 2, 2009 by · Comments Off

The Scottish government has been urged to tackle bills from energy suppliers as well as reducing demand – by heightening its investment into nationwide efficiency. By spending an additional £100 million each year, a reasonable figure says the economy, energy and tourism committee, it would enable Scotland to overhaul its energy policies and reduce the number of people living in fuel poverty, reported the Scotsman.

Liberal Democrat MSP, Iain Smith who organised the committee, added that existing nuclear power stations in Scotland may also have to have their lives extended in order to avoid having to build new ones – as the government was once again criticised for refusing to consider a potential role for nuclear power in the country’s energy future.

Energy minister Jim Mather pointed out that the Scottish government is dedicated to energy issues and reiterated that energy efficiency is one of the core elements of the government’s plans whereby Scotland leads the UK in terms of renewable energy generation.

Weak Energy Prices cause carbon drift

October 2, 2009 by · Comments Off

As reported by Reuters (London) the European carbon futures are down slightly in early trade today, following power and oil, traders have said. The EU Allowances for December delivery were down 1.7% or 22 cents at 13.00 euros a tonne as at 0740 GMT.

One emissions trader said:

“It’s slightly weaker on energy…

… We’ve had a lot of positioning ahead of past auctions”

This was in reference to next week’s British auction of European Union allowances (EUAs), the trader continued by saying he is expecting some strategic trading later today or early next week.

U.S. crude oil futures fell by more than $1 to below $70 a barrel, which was driven lower by the dollar’s recovery and concerns over U.S. employment data also due today, there are also worries over the West’s talks with Iran regarding the OPEC member’s nuclear plan eased.

German Calendar 2010 baseload power is down 45 cents at 46.6 euros.

And benchmark CERs were unchanged at 11.82 euros a tonne, setting the EUA-CER spread at 1.18 euros.

Beware of illegal Gas installers

October 1, 2009 by · Comments Off

A warning has been issued by the Gas Safe Register advising people to be on the lookout for illegal gas fitters – The Gas Safe Register exists to protect you, your family, and your property from dangerous gas work, and replaced the CORGI gas register in Great Britain and the Isle of Man on 1 April 2009 and anyone carrying out work on gas installations/appliances has to be registered with Gas Safe Register –if they not, they are breaking the law.

According to Gas Safe Register around 250,000 illegal gas jobs are being carried out nationwide each year where a spokesperson for the organisation stated that one in ten illegal installations investigated over the last nine months had been so dangerous that they had to disconnect appliances immediately to make it safe.

Incorrectly fitted, badly repaired and poorly maintained gas appliances are a major cause of lethal carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, which can also lead to gas leaks and even explosions – only a Gas Safe registered engineer is legally allowed to install gas appliances, boilers, hobs, ovens or fires in your home or business – so look out for the yellow Gas Safe Register triangle not the orange CORGI registration badge.

Powering worlds most powerful wind turbine

October 1, 2009 by · Comments Off

Alstom Power is a global leader in the world of power generation, setting the benchmark for innovative and environmentally conscious technologies, together with Energias de Portugal Renovaveis (EDPR) – a world leader in the renewable energy sector – the energy companies have initiated the first wind farm using the ecotècnia 100 wind turbine – the world’s most powerful onshore wind turbine.

The turbine has been designed and installed by Alstom Power on behalf of EDPR at Vieux Moulin near Pithiviers in France, and becomes the 12th wind farm to be fitted out by Alstom Power in France and is due to be operational by mid-October 2009.

Ecotècnia 100 wind turbines feature the following:

Power Each unit is 140 metres high, which is the equivalent of a 50 storey building, they have a rotor diameter of 100 metres and a blade length of 48.8 metres. The design enables the maximum benefit to be derived from the wind, including moderate winds, and can withstand wind speeds of up to 8.5 metres/sec.

Performance The turbine has a nominal power of 3 MW which is twice the output of previously designed machines.

Reliability and longevity Teams at Alstom Power have worked to produce a unique stress-reducing design, Alstom Pure Torque™ which protects the gearbox and boosts reliability.

Ease of maintenance The unprecedented design of the nacelle gives easier access for the technical staff, enabling easier maintenance of equipment.

The ecotècnia 100 wind turbines can deliver enough power to allow a given number of MW to be produced with fewer units, therefore reducing the land area required, and it is expected that the electricity generated by Vieux Moulin wind farm will meet the needs of 12,000 homes, avoiding the production of 42,000 tonnes a year of CO2 (according to: European Wind Energy Association).
