Bing Bong
Bing is Microsoft’s internet search engine which finds and organises the answers you need quickly and easily allowing faster and more informed decisions, however the new search engine which was reported to have been challenging rival Google, becoming the fastest growing internet search engine in the U.S. acquiring an 11% share of the search market, has actually lost some of that market share for the first time since it launched in May.
Followed by more bad news for Microsoft as their Internet Explorer also losses market share to other emerging browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox and Apple’s Safari – however, Microsoft is hopeful the bad news will be short lived, as analysts believe that the forthcoming October 22 launch of Windows 7 may work well to reverse the company’s downturn.

Join The Google Wave
A new tool from Google will be introduced to the public today as it goes on trial, reports BBC News Online. Google Wave combines email, instant messaging and wiki-style editing.
Google describes the tool as “how email would look if it were invented today”. They say it will revolutionise how people communicate online.
From 1600 BST today 100,000 invited users will be able to nominate 5 other people to “join the Wave”. Among the functions of the tool include real time typing meaning that people can see a comment being written and have an answer or comment ready before the other person has even finished their comment.
The conversations, unlike instant messenger, can continue even once everyone is logged out and anyone involved in the conversation can read the whole strand in full at a later date. The messages can even be edited at any point by those taking part in the conversation. In fact, Google now writes all its design documents in Wave.
It’s also easy to share photos in Wave. They can just be dragged from the desktop into the Wave platform.
Google Wave will run in most browsers but it doesn’t run in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Google says that anyone using internet explorer will have to download a plug-in called Chrome Frame. However Microsoft does not recommend using this as they say it will compromise security.
However, Google say they have tried hard to make Wave work with internet explorer but with internet explorer still being the main browser everyone uses, it may affect the take up of the Wave.
Google report that over a million people have expressed an interest in the Wave platform and it will get a full launch next year.

Free Microsoft Security Software Available Today
As of today users of Windows will be able to download Microsoft’s free computer security package from Microsoft’s Security Essentials website, reports BBC News Online. The software gives users basic protection from viruses, Trojans, rootkits and spyware.
This will be the second time Microsoft has attempted to make its own branded security package.
Microsoft, who have previously released a beta version of the software in the US, China and Brazil, said the software would be available to anyone and downloading it wouldn’t involve registering and there would be no limit on how long the software could be used for.
There is a restriction to the use however although it’s the only one. It has to be downloaded on a “genuine” Windows PC. In other words the copy of Windows being used has to be verified by Microsoft.
The software runs on XP, Vista and Windows 7 when that is released in October.

Microsoft and EDP Help With UNHCR Projects
The UN refugee agency has announced projects, in collaboration with Microsoft and EDP energy that will help thousands of refugees in Africa and Asia.
The projects were announced by UNHCR and involved Microsoft and the Portuguese energy company EDP. The project that Microsoft will be involved with will give refugees in 11 countries access to computers. The Community Technology Access (CTA) project which was launched with Microsoft and PricewaterhouseCoopers, will enable refugees to use computers for education and business.
Initially three pilot CTA centres will be built in refugee camps in Bangladesh and Rwanda. The centres will use solar power and provide rugged PC solutions and internet access. In 2010 another 19 centres will be built at refugee camps in 9 other countries.
The head of Microsoft’s Global Corporate Affairs section said the programme would help to develop “valuable workforce skills for adult refugees.”
The Portuguese energy company EDP is to help the UNHCR bring renewable energy solutions to the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya where some 50,000 people are living. Energy is scare and therefore expensive for those living in the camp. Renewable energy will help to provide permanent and long lasting benefits for those living in the camp and also people who live near by.
EDP will help to install solar panels, improved diesel generators and solar ovens. At the same time they will support reforestation schemes which will reduce energy costs and improve living conditions, health and livelihoods.
UN High Commissioner António Guterres, said “We believe that providing access to technology, particularly in remote areas, can help restore some of the stability these people had known as well as providing crucial access to education and livelihood opportunities, in particular for refugee women and girls.”

New Smartphone Will Challenge Apple iPhone
There’s a new mobile phone coming out towards the end of 2009 and it’s expected to have lots of features and an unusual amount of power, reports dailymail.co.uk.
As with many other phones it will have GPS and Bluetooth, a 4.8in touch screen, WiFi and masses of storage and to top it all, it will have a full version of Windows XP.
The new smartphone has been created by In Technology Group, a Chinese company. Basically the phone will be able to do everything that a computer can do. Analysts expect it could challenge the Apple iPhone.
The smartphone will have 1 GB of RAM meaning it will be able to run programs such as Microsoft Office, video and music playback.
The xpPhone may not be the best looking phone around but its applications will be familiar to most users.
A couple of disadvantages are the lack of a camera and the short battery life. There is a camera on the phone but it may not be quite what many users expect and will be best simply used for video calls. The battery will not run for more than 7 hours so you’ll have to carry your charger round with you just in case!

Google’s Chrome Frames Microsoft’s I.E.

The upgrade means that Internet Explorer users can access the higher speeds of Chrome and the extra capabilities of Chrome.
Microsoft has said that it will continue to support Internet Explorer 6 which has meant that developers are making their web pages using outdated software. The Chrome Frame means users get the benefits of Chrome even if they are using Internet Explorer 6. It also means that web developers can make use of new open web technologies even in Internet Explorer.

New Web Portal Live Today – Yahoo!
Yahoo! has relaunched its web portal, reports BBC News Online. Yahoo! hopes the new look website will increase traffic and revenue.
The new page will allow users to integrate rival web services such as Facebook and Hotmail into the portal.
Yahoo! says that most of its users still go to the portal first and not to the search engine. Senior vice-president for Europe Yahoo!, Rich Riley says that this means the front page adverts on the portal are very powerful and can cost millions of dollars for just one day of global advertising.
Yahoo! believes that being open to rival applications will increase profits by making the portal “stickier”. This means that people will stay on the site but will be able to see their web services from the Yahoo! portal.
Yahoo!’s search engine is also going through an overhaul and will eventually benefit from Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing. This comes after Microsoft and Yahoo! agreed a deal in July so that Yahoo! can use Microsoft’s search technology and search advertising.
The deal is still waiting approval though and it’s not expected to be finalised until spring 2010.
