Ecotricity is an electricity company with a difference – dedicated to changing the way electricity is made by investing in clean forms of power generation like wind energy – combined with being the only green electricity company actually building new renewable energy sources.

Featured in a press release, Ecotricity have launched an energy debate in the District of Stroud by campaigning for 50% of Stroud’s energy needs to be sourced from clean, green energy from wind turbines, where they have already proven the viability of wind energy with one local turbine.

Ecotricity argue that just 16 windmills in the area would create enough energy to power 50% of Stroud’s homes, which ultimately would benefit the UK’s energy security.

Stoud5050 is a local campaign for local people, where Ecotricity is aiming for half of the district’s electricity to be completely renewable, actively contributing to the area and supported by local resident.

Utility Exchange earlier this week reported how the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson unveiled the capital’s first 10 “low-carbon zones” – set to receive more than £200,000 in funding low-carbon zones, including the installation of rooftop solar panels, electric car recharging points and introducing “low-carbon zone energy doctors”

The latest development comes as London’s traffic lights get set to receive an environmental makeover when they are replaced by a longer lasting and energy-efficient design – initially some 3,500 traffic lights at 300 junctions across London will be replaced by a design utilises energy-saving LEDs (light-emitting diode) – which have an advantage of lasting ten times longer than the more conventional filament bulbs.

The Mayor commented that the installation of these eco-bulbs will cut the climate change emissions coming from London’s traffic lights by over half, and save money from energy bills where according to figures the first 300 junctions will save 600 tonnes of emissions a year plus £200,000 in energy costs.

London does however have 6,000 junctions with traffic signals and it is hoped that they will all be converted eventually.
