People have always tried to hack their way into the computers of others ever since the internet began – at first hacking was seen as a way for ‘geeks’ to impress each other, however, more seriously hacking has become a way for criminals to steal and blackmail – nonetheless, the strategy for computer security largely remains the same as companies and consumers create the thickest defence possible around their computers to keep the bad guys out.

However, realising that computer security experts are not protecting their computers hackers they are ready to try a new approach – by recruiting victims and other computer users to help go on the offensive and hunt the hackers down.

Rowan Trollope is the senior vice-president for consumer products at Symantec – the largest maker of antivirus software, and as reported by businessweek.com, said:

“It’s time to stop building burglar alarms to keep people out and go after the bad guys”

Where, as one of many antivirus software companies, Symantec is today introducing its new Norton Internet Security where they will ask customers to opt in to a program that has been designed to collect data about attempted computer intrusions and then forward the information to the relevant authorities.

Symantec is also going to start posting the FBI’s top 10 hackers and their schemes on its Web site, where customers have access to software updates.

And it has also been reported that next year, the company will offer cash rewards for information that leads to an arrest.

Hackers beware…
