Shine a Light
This week sees new rules coming into force – banning the sale and manufacture of 100Watt light bulbs as Europe continues to reduce its carbon emissions, whereby traditionally frosted light bulbs and clear bulbs which are 100Watt or more will no longer be manufactured, sold or imported into Europe.
Traditional incandescent light bulbs are being replaced by long-life energy-efficient light bulbs under new European Union (EU) legislation in a bid to help curb climate change and reduce energy bills.
The ban will extend to all incandescent bulbs by 2012 after an agreement was reached by all 27 EU governments last year, thus gradually phasing out incandescent bulbs over the next three years, meaning homeowners will have to buy energy-efficient bulbs.
According to the energy efficiency body, the Energy Saving Trust, switching to energy-efficient bulbs could reduce the average UK household’s annual fuel bill by up to £37.00
Consumers can still buy older bulbs until supplies run out, but the BBC has reported how people are stockpiling 100w bulbs ahead of the ban!
