Phone Boxes Are On The Charge

The Spanish may have come up with an idea to solve the problem of unused public telephone boxes, reports guardian.co.uk. As more and more people have mobile phones the phone box has become redundant in many areas and in Madrid they have come up with the idea of using them as part of a network to charge electric vehicles.

The idea is to be tested using 30 phone boxes as recharging points in Madrid, Barcelona and Seville. Phones boxes are usually perfectly placed close to the edge of pavements and already have their own electricity supply so they are quite easy to transform into charging points.

The Spanish government is spending 1.5m Euros on recharging points with a total of 10m Euros going on trying to get the Spanish population to begin using electric cars. They hope to get 2,000 electric vehicles into cities over the next two years with the incentives that owners of electric cars will be able to park free in Madrid and their car tax would be reduced by 75%.
