Nuclear Waste Warning
According to power-technology.com – The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has issued a final warning letter to British Energy’s Ayrshire nuclear power plant following an incident that resulted in radioactive waste being discharged into the sea, as reported by The Press and Journal.
It was on the 15th May this year when 570 gallons of low-level waste had reportedly leaked into the Firth of Clyde from Hunterston B plant in Ayrshire before it was sampled for effluent quality as required under the disposal procedures.
The letter warns the company of enforcement action which is being taken against the company in case of further contravention of legislation.
British Energy who forms part of EDF Energy, stated that the mishap occurred during a routine maintenance operation to ‘leak test’ a pipe on the discharge route from the waste facility, and have assured that the discharge did not harm the environment because the volume and levels were safe.
