The Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, has officially opened a solar farm in Sheffield, reports BBC News Online. Utility Exchange has reported previously on projects in South Yorkshire involving sources of renewable energy, see: http://www.utility-exchange.co.uk/2010/05/sheffield-college-erects-turbines-on-new-tower-block/.

The Sheffield Solar Farm consists of 70m2 of solar panels on the roof of the University of Sheffield’s Hicks Building. The solar panels will take energy from the sun and turn it into renewable electricity which will then be used in the University building. Any excess electricity generated will be sold to the National Grid.

The solar array on the University roof is being used as a test bed for new and experimental designs. In fact the Physics Department at the University is working on developing new generations of solar cells using plastic instead of silicon in order to make them cheaper.

The University Solar Farm Project is being led by Dr Alastair Buckley who said “It is an important venture as it is bridging the gap between the research lab and how solar cells are used in the real world”.
