Yahoo! has relaunched its web portal, reports BBC News Online. Yahoo! hopes the new look website will increase traffic and revenue.

The new page will allow users to integrate rival web services such as Facebook and Hotmail into the portal.

Yahoo! says that most of its users still go to the portal first and not to the search engine. Senior vice-president for Europe Yahoo!, Rich Riley says that this means the front page adverts on the portal are very powerful and can cost millions of dollars for just one day of global advertising.

Yahoo! believes that being open to rival applications will increase profits by making the portal “stickier”. This means that people will stay on the site but will be able to see their web services from the Yahoo! portal.

Yahoo!’s search engine is also going through an overhaul and will eventually benefit from Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing. This comes after Microsoft and Yahoo! agreed a deal in July so that Yahoo! can use Microsoft’s search technology and search advertising.

The deal is still waiting approval though and it’s not expected to be finalised until spring 2010.
