MOD Gets Smart Meters Despite Security Risk
The Ministry of Defence is installing data monitoring technology in all its buildings to ensure energy efficiency, reports eWeekeurope.
Despite experts suggesting that the technology could be a security threat IT services business Logica is to install the technology which will hopefully reduce costs by around £300m a year. The system being installed is based on Logica’s Sustainability Indicator Reporting Application (SIRA). This collects information from smart meters which in the process of being installed in MOD buildings. The system will be able pick out buildings which are using excessive amounts of energy.
The system will link together gas and electricity meters and it’s believed the MOD will also link the system so that it can monitor oil and liquid petroleum gas consumption.
There have been worries however that the smart system can be hacked into and that worms could be created to spread from one smart meter to another. This would obviously raise concerns if this was to happen in an MOD building.
There is currently research going on into preventing hacking and the spread of viruses and reduce security risks.
