Waste that can’t be recycled is being used to produce electricity for around 3,500 homes around Gateshead, reports mhwmagazine.co.uk. The facility at Path Head landfill site collects non-recycled waste from in and around Gateshead.

SITA UK has installed three gas engines at the site and it produces 16,644 MW hours a year. The landfill gas is used to power the gas engines. This means that CO2 emissions are reduced by 7,150 tonnes a year, so helping with the fight against climate change.

There will always be some waste that cannot be recycled and it’s important that this waste can then be put to good use and used to generate electricity. Landfill gas counts as renewable technology. Energy that’s produced from this type of facility receives support under the Renewables Obligation.

The site accepts non recycled waste from households, demolition waste and road sweepings from households and commercial premises.
