Higher Feed In Tariff Could Help Solar Power
The UK is still playing catch up with Europe as far as solar power is concerned but it’s hoped that the introduction of an extra 10p on the proposed tariff given to small scale renewable energy producers will help the UK’s solar energy sector to take off, reports The Ecologist.
The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) have agreed to a feed in tariff for households and businesses and they will be paid an above the market rate for each unit of electricity they generate and then feed back into the grid.
The suggested feed in tariff is about 30p per unit of electricity but green campaigners say that if this was increased to 40p the uptake of solar power would increase by six times.
The Federation of Master Builder has also suggested than an increase in the tariff by 10p would mean around 400,000 more solar installations by 2014 and as a result around 30,000 jobs would be created.
The extra 10p then in the feed in tariff would create a huge difference in the rate of solar panel installations and mean that the UK would at last begin to catch up with the progress being made by their European neighbours.
