A Devon theme park is set to be the first theme park to be powered by solar energy.

Crealy Great Adventure Park in Devon is set to be powered by solar energy. Solar panels will be installed by Low Carbon Solar and these will provide electricity to power the theme park’s rides and help reduce its business electricity costs.

Low Carbon Solar will install solar panels at the site which will generate around 1MW of electricity. Around 18,580m2 of solar panels will be installed on the roof of the main buildings and the car park will have carports which will also be covered in solar panels.

The managing director of Crealy Great Adventure Park, Rod Pearson came up with the idea for installing solar panels with Low Carbon Solar. Once all the panels are installed they should generate around 90% of the park’s electricity requirements when it’s at its peak in the summer. Solar panels won’t just power the rides they will power everything including the catering facilities and toilets. If there is any unused power the park will be able to sell this back to the National Grid.

Once the panels have been installed they should save the park around 515 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year and generate enough electricity for around 200 households. It means they should see their business electricity rates go down as well as helping them to reduce their carbon footprint.
