Choosing a cheaper energy supplier

There are claims for further choices over domestic energy suppliers in order to ensure cheaper energy packages are available, reports energyhelpline.com.

This comes after the release of statements from the country’s six largest energy suppliers including British Gas, npower, EDF and Scottish & Southern Energy to Ofgem, the UKs Gas and Electricity regulator – stating that prices are not going to be reduced.

Clare Corbett an energy campaigner for Which? stated that there is a need for transparency along with further choice within the energy market and that because we don’t know how suppliers manage their wholesale costs, it is impossible to determine what wholesale prices the suppliers face themselves.

She has also questioned how competitive the market rally is and consequently what action Ofgem can take to ensure fair competition remains within the market.

The statements from Britain’s big six energy suppliers were as a result of a letter from Ofgem’s chief executive, Alistair Buchanan, who suggested that they owe it to consumers to explain the effect falling wholesale costs would have on energy bills.
