Centrica tops Carbon disclosure
Centrica is the largest supplier of gas to domestic customers in the UK, and one of the largest suppliers of electricity and operates under the trading names “Scottish Gas” in Scotland and “British Gas” throughout the rest of the UK. According to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) – an independent not-for-profit organisation responsible for the world’s largest database of corporate climate change information – Centrica has been ranked the UK’s top performing utility and the score puts Centrica in the world’s top 25 countries for carbon emissions disclosure.
The Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index is compiled by one of the world’s largest professional services firms – PricewaterhouseCoopers, and is widely respected amongst investors as it rates companies according to the level and quality of their disclosure on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change strategy, and looks specifically at how companies’ manage their direct and indirect energy use which enables a comparison of carbon emissions across industry sectors.
Centrica whose vision is to become a leading integrated energy company within its chosen markets around the world, was also highly praised as one of the top three utilities in the world by the CDP, where the report states that the utility provider demonstrated ‘an acute awareness of the risks and opportunities presented by climate change’. It continued by saying ‘the business is already well developed to deal with climate change, with structured targets for reducing emissions over time through either internal abatement measures or diversification of energy sources within the portfolio’ confirmation that Centrica is striving for a low carbon economy.
