BT and Virgin Increase Call Charges
Britain’s biggest telecommunications provider BT has increased its daytime call rate from 4.5p to 5.25p per minute for residential customers, and in a similar move, cable giant Virgin Media has also increased its daytime telephone call charges from 5.39p to 6.36p per minute.
Business development manager, Simon Piper at Homephonechoices.co.uk, commented that these price increases will dramatically affect customers who are on evening and weekend call plans, making calls during the day, whereby now a five minute call for a Virgin Media customer will cost 41.59p, instead of the 35.75p before the price rise, which takes into account the call connection charge.
Both telecom suppliers will also increase their call connection charges – the one-off cost you get charged for placing a call, regardless of its duration; BT is increasing this charge from 8p per call to 9.05p per call, and Virgin Media will increase its call connection charge from 8.80p to 9.79p per call.
Homephonechoices.co.uk, a consumerchoices.co.uk website suggests that evening and weekend plan customers might be worthwhile switching to an unlimited anytime calls plan.
