A warning has been issued by the Gas Safe Register advising people to be on the lookout for illegal gas fitters – The Gas Safe Register exists to protect you, your family, and your property from dangerous gas work, and replaced the CORGI gas register in Great Britain and the Isle of Man on 1 April 2009 and anyone carrying out work on gas installations/appliances has to be registered with Gas Safe Register –if they not, they are breaking the law.

According to Gas Safe Register around 250,000 illegal gas jobs are being carried out nationwide each year where a spokesperson for the organisation stated that one in ten illegal installations investigated over the last nine months had been so dangerous that they had to disconnect appliances immediately to make it safe.

Incorrectly fitted, badly repaired and poorly maintained gas appliances are a major cause of lethal carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, which can also lead to gas leaks and even explosions – only a Gas Safe registered engineer is legally allowed to install gas appliances, boilers, hobs, ovens or fires in your home or business – so look out for the yellow Gas Safe Register triangle not the orange CORGI registration badge.
