Utility Exchange reported last week that an American owned Derby business, Celanese Acetate, announced it was to close its factory with the lost of over 400 jobs because of high business energy prices See: http://www.utility-exchange.co.uk/2010/04/rising-business-energy-costs-forces-factory-closure/. Now, three other Derbyshire businesses have told of their measures to save energy and therefore reduce energy costs.
Rolls-Royce, Bombardier and Toyota are the biggest international manufacturers in Derby and they have told The Derby Telegraph Business Section that they have taken a proactive approach to reducing energy costs.
Bombardier has implemented several measures over the last few years including introducing movement sensitive lighting and heating and replacing old roofs to reduce heat loss. Roller shutter doors have been fitted to workshops so that they can be open and closed quickly, ensuring a reduced amount of heat loss. The company saved £8,000 just by introducing 55 energy efficient tea boilers.
Meanwhile Toyota has reduced its energy use by 34% with 50% of this achieved from ideas from workers and improved technology. Simple energy saving measures have included switching off machinery and lights when not being used and installing more energy efficient boilers.
Finally, Rolls Royce wouldn’t tell the Derby Telegraph what measures it had taken to reduce energy costs but did say that saving energy was “part of its everyday operations”.
So while it’s important to get the best business energy deal it’s also important to save energy too and use energy in the most efficient way possible.
