YRM awarded EDF contract

Award-winning architects and designers, YRM, have been selected by utility firm, EDF Energy, to act as the main architect for the planned Sizewell C nuclear power plant in Suffolk, UK and according to World Nuclear this latest agreement follows an earlier one regarding the new Hinkley Point C plant in Somerset. The contract is for the preparation of the masterplan and design that will provide the architectural vision for the nuclear power plant, its associated buildings and the landscape design.

London-based YRM will be responsible for leading the pre-application consultation process as well as the planning application to the Infrastructure Planning Commission – IPC, and means that YRM will have to work very closely with EDF along with third party design and technical colleagues in the EU.

YRM’s latest contract follows a similar one from EDF in 2009 where they were appointed to act as the masterplanner and to prepare the detailed designs for the turbine halls, public information centre, office and logistics centre for the forthcoming reactors at the Hinkley Point plant.

France’s EDF is planning to build four European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) nuclear power units in the UK at two new twin-unit power plants, Sizewell C and Hinkley Point C. The first to be built will be Hinkley Point C, in Somerset which EDF Energy hopes will be operational by the end of 2017.
