Wind Progress

Progress is finally being made between several European countries to allow energy from offshore wind supplies to contribute more energy to the national electricity supply. The North Seas Countries’ Offshore Grid Initiative has developed an extensive offshore wind infrastructure in the North and Irish Seas whereby the UK, together with eight other European countries, have committed to the development of wind power.

Paolo Berrino, press officer for the European Wind Energy Association, confirmed that some grids are being constructed already, some are being planned, and other grid projects have already received a boost in funding allocated by the European Investment Bank and the European Economic Recovery Plan.

More importantly, the European Wind Energy Association has a long term vision of a “super grid” – as this would allow power to be fed into one supply that is connected to all of northern Europe. In addition this would lead to more competition within the energy industry.

Mr. Berrino further added that the offshore developments were of high importance right now because without any extending and upgrading, Europe will not be able to meet emission reductions or achieve the level of renewable energy that it has set in its targets.
