UK researchers have designed a new device that could help consumers monitor and compare their energy usage – The ‘Wattbox’ has been developed by a team at De Montfort University and has been designed to learn a householders’ energy usage habits, it then utilises the information and sets the thermostat to suit householder lifestyles.
Using a Wattbox means householders will be able to see how much more or less energy they are consuming as a result of their choice plus the system comes with a simple display and additional buttons to increase or decrease heat when the automatic decision does not meet users’ requirements.
The Wattbox could help reduce energy consumption by as much as 20%, furthermore because the device provides instant feedback it means consumers can more easily see the effects of changing their energy practices or even take the option to switch energy providers for a far cheaper tariff.
Peter Boait, of De Montfort University, said:
“Involving people in the design of technology and in developing energy reduction strategies offers a new opportunity to make real cuts without undermining comfort”
