Canadian and Japanese researchers have come up with a way to reduce the carbon emissions from coal fired power stations without decommissioning them, reports Greenbang.
The researchers have suggested the way to continue using coal fired power stations while reducing their carbon footprint is to use a biomass fuel. The study by the researchers suggests using a blend of coal and wood pellets instead of just coal. This would enable coal fired power stations to continue generating electricity cost effectively while also reducing pollution.
Simply replacing coal with wood pellets would reduce carbon emissions by 91% but even using a mix of 10 – 20% could significantly reduce emissions say the researchers.
