Ofgem Introduces Green Energy Label

Ofgem is launching a new scheme which will tell users if a supplier is reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reports BBC News Online.  The new label will tell users which energy supplier is doing the most to use renewable energy.

While energy companies are committed to using more green energy, without the labelling, suppliers could say that they were helping the environment but not actually doing all that much. The aim of the scheme is to reassure householders and businesses that they are not wasting their money by paying for green energy.

In order to get a “green” label, energy suppliers will have to show an independent panel of experts that they are taking extra steps to increase their use of renewable energy. Currently only 2% of Britons buy green energy and it’s hoped that the new label will encourage more people to buy green energy.
