BT Broadband Will Cost Couple £45,000

BT keeps telling us how well it’s doing rolling out superfast broadband and the Government keeps telling us that it wants 90% of households to have superfast broadband by 2017. However, one couple is struggling to get ordinary average slow broadband in 2010, reports The Daily Telegraph.

The couple, from Appleby, Cumbria, want broadband for their home and guesthouse, so that they can do away with their current dial up connection and while other residents of Appleby have broadband, BT says it will cost them £45,000 to get connected.

The problem, according to BT, is that in order to get the Walkers connected, they will have to install new equipment so that others in the village will benefit. BT said that while some residents of the village have access to broadband there was no capacity for new users.

Mr Walker said BT was expecting them to pay for equipment that would upgrade the whole village. Mr Walker’s phone calls are with the Phone Co-Op and while BT said it would pay the first £8,000 of the cost of the work, the remaining £37,000 would be passed on to the Phone Co-Op who would in turn pass it on to the Walkers.

So while the Government looks set to introduce a broadband tax to help pay for superfast broadband for 90% of households by 2017, it seems unclear who is going to pay for broadband access for those living in the more remote and “awkward” areas of the country. It seems unlikely householders are going to pay £45,000 to get connected to broadband.
