British Gas Launch Pay As You Save Scheme

British Gas is looking for households to take part in a new scheme called Pay As You Save, reports The Guardian. The new scheme was launched on the first day of the Copenhagen talks so we’ve not really heard much about it as commentators have been more concerned with the UN climate change talks.

Under a pilot scheme, householders will be given a loan to help them install either energy saving measures or micro-generation projects e.g. solar panels. The loan is to be paid back over a period of time – up to 25 years – through the money saved by lower gas and electricity bills. It could also be paid back by the energy they produce which may be sold back to the grid.

The scheme means that householders can install climate saving measures and also pay for energy without having to pay extra monthly costs.

The government is keen to make this scheme work as it really wants to improve the country’s housing stock and also generate more electricity from renewable sources. The Conservatives have said that if they win the next election they will introduce a similar scheme in conjunction with both Tesco and Marks and Spencer.

The pilot scheme will run until 2011 with loans starting to go out in the spring of 2010. You don’t have to be a British Gas customer to take part in the scheme and they are particularly interested in those keen on their own micro-generation projects.
