Funding for Eco-Friendly Street Lights

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Energy saving street lamps, which have been developed by a Yorkshire company, could soon be helping the UK reduce carbon emissions thanks to the support from angel investors Ewin Woodward Development – EWD. As a member of the Yorkshire Association of Business Angels, EWD is providing a £300,000 funding package to start up business Carbon Reduction Technology – CRT.

CRT has developed the e-lamp, which is an innovative LED street lighting system that actually uses up to 75% less electricity than traditional sodium street lights, and although there are other LED lights on the market, the e-lamp also has a unique microprocessor patented by CRT – which makes the light more efficient.

In addition, these lamps are also among only a few LED lights on the market to meet British standards for use on public roads.

William Robson, CRT co-director remarked:

“LED is commonly used on walkways and car parks, but our focus is on street lighting…

… We’ve got some trials taking place at the moment with various local authorities, and once we’ve built a track record for the e-lamp system, we’ll be marketing the lights throughout the UK”

Business Skills

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

As announced by the department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) trials of a scheme that is designed to improve access to information regarding training courses, as well as show learners the exact amount of Government funding that is available to them are so far proving to be a success states a report out today.

An assessment of the pilot scheme has indicated that skills accounts have a number of benefits, including encouraging people to take up and complete courses – 94% of respondents to the survey said that skills accounts are a good idea with 80% of respondents saying that having a skills account would encourage them to take part in future learning.

Skills accounts aim to help people assess their skills, interests and qualifications, as well as understand the level of funding that will be available to them, and also give access to detailed information about career options therefore assisting to choose a suitable course. The online tools performed well in the survey, and reinforces that the Government is on the right track to providing the kind of service that people actually want.

Kevin Brennan, the UK’s Skills Minister commented:

“Skills accounts will put choice in the hands of the learners and allow them to take control of their learning and working lives. It is vital people are armed with information and advice that will enable them to make the right decisions to get into learning and work…

… The information available through skills accounts mean learners will see just how committed Government is to delivering skills and see how much funding has been made available to support them”

Upon the successful completion of the Governments pilot scheme – roll out will begin in autumn 2010.

Farming for cheaper energy bills

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

According to a report on energyhelpline.com more farmers could be convinced to switch their energy practices as they become eligible for loans of up to £20,000 – designed to help them make their operations more energy-efficient.

Details of the loans – which will be made available by environmental body the Carbon Trust from February – are that they will be unsecured and interest-free – in a bid to encourage more farmers to apply for them.

Amounts of between £3,000 and £20,000 will be on offer whereby utilising the cash to become more energy efficient could result in emissions being reduced by as much as 25,000 tonnes each year, and consequently means agricultural energy bills could be reduced by as much as £4 million a year.

Environment secretary Hilary Benn stated:

“It makes sense for farmers to reduce the energy they use. It reduces the cost of producing food and it cuts the environmental impact too – something more and more consumers are asking about”

CBI Says £15m A Day Wasted Due To Energy Inefficiency

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

The Confederation of Business and Industry (CBI) has said that million of pounds are being wasted each year because of inefficient offices, leaky boilers or draughty homes, reports The Daily Telegraph.

The CBI said that as a result of old factories and inefficient houses, tonnes of carbon dioxide are escaping into the atmosphere but that this could be saved by people being more energy efficient.

The CBI issued the warning to the government that more needs to be done to help and educate people to reduce their energy consumption. The Director-General of the CBI said as much as £15 million a day was being wasted on energy by both businesses and homeowners. He went on to say that more incentives were needed, along with easy to access support, to enable businesses and homeowners to improve their insulation, make energy saving improvements and possibly even switch to more efficient cars.

The fact that the Copenhagen summit didn’t achieve everything that was hoped and resulted in a weak deal made it even more difficult for businesses to invest in low carbon technology, he said. It was therefore more important than ever for the Government to help and provide an example.

Many people are still unaware of what they can do to save energy and many businesses would be keen to do so if they were aware of what simple changes they could make to save both energy and money.

Barnet Residents Now Without Gas AND Electricity

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Utility Exchange reported on Monday that residents of Barnet in north London were without gas after a burst water pipe meant water got into gas pipes. BBC News Online reports that many homes are still without both gas and electricity after the heaters people were given to heat their home overloaded supplies. (see: http://www.utility-exchange.co.uk/2009/12/burst-water-pipe-cuts-off-gas-in-barnet/)

Three days after they lost their gas supply around 750 homes are still without gas and according to EDF Energy, around 180 customers have been without electricity since Tuesday evening.

Engineers from across the country have gone to Barnet to try to get residents reconnected before Christmas. So far they have managed to restore supplies to 980 homes.

EDF Energy has said that the high demand on the electricity network as the result of electric fires distributed to customers had damaged some of their equipment meaning power supplies had been affected. As a result EDF is asking customers to use only essential appliances and turn off those that are non-essential while they carry out repairs. This seems difficult when daytime temperatures have rarely been above freezing all week and children have now broken up from school meaning they are home all day.

EDF has since reconfigured the electricity network to ensure that it’s more robust and stands up to any extra demand placed on it particularly by electric heaters.

Scottish Power Accept Price Review

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Following our earlier report that Scottish and Southern Energy – SSE, have decided to accept Ofgem the UK’s Gas and Electricity market regulator’s proposed energy price controls;

http://www.utility-exchange.co.uk/2009/12/scottish-southern-energy-accept-ofgem-price-plans/

ScottishPower, following careful consideration has also confirmed that the energy supplier will be accepting Ofgem’s proposals regarding the electricity distribution price control for the five year period beginning 1 April 2010 – covering the SP Distribution and SP Manweb network areas.

However, as reported in an issued press release, ScottishPower shall maintain their concerns that the 4% headline rate of return is not enough to encourage and stimulate the investment that the UK’s infrastructure needs. Furthermore, ScottishPower believes that this rate of return is not consistent with the amount of investments required in order to support the delivery of the UK’s energy policy and EU carbon reduction targets, particularly due to the global competition for investment.

Shell and Hess Swap Shop

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Multinational energy company Shell, in a move to consolidate its exploration and production portfolio in the North Sea and West Africa, has agreed to acquire Hess Corporation’s entire upstream portfolio in Gabon together with its interest in the Clair field – which lies in British waters west of the Shetland Islands.

And in return, Hess, a global integrated energy company, will acquire Shell’s interest in two Norwegian offshore fields, Valhall and Hod.

These transactions form a strategic trade which means that there will not be any cash payments involved.

Malcolm Brinded, Executive Director of Shell’s Upstream International business, commented:

“We are very pleased to increase our equity stake in Gabon—a country in which we have operated with great success for nearly 50 years…

… At the same time, by increasing our interest in the Clair field, we are also demonstrating our continued interest in investing in long-term assets of the UK—one of our heartlands”

BlackBerry Network Suffers Outage

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

BlackBerry users in the U.S. are suffering from a second network outage in a week reports The Daily Telegraph. BlackBerry users have been unable to send or receive emails.

The outage isn’t just affecting the U.S though it’s also affecting users in South America. The makers of the BlackBerry, Research in Motion, said some customers were experiencing “delays in message delivery” and teams were working on how to resolve the problem.

The problem is affecting a number of different networks including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile.

Part of the problem is the amount of data networks are now dealing with and outages are becoming more frequent. Only this week O2 experienced problems when their network crashed leaving some people unable to make calls, browse the internet or send and receive emails. Vodafone has also experienced problems recently.
