SSE Plans CCS At Ferrybridge Plant

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has announced that it wants to apply for planning permission to develop a trial carbon capture facility at the Ferrybridge coal-fired power station near Castleford in Yorkshire, reports proactiveinvestors. The facility would be the biggest carbon capture facility in the country if it was given the go-ahead.

The government said on Monday that no new coal fired power stations should be built without some form of carbon reduction measures in place. SSE’s proposed trial would cost around £21m and if given permission the facility would be developed in conjunction with Doosan Babcock, a subsidiary of the Doosan Group.

The trial will aim to demonstrate the carbon capture part of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. If planning permission is granted it’s hoped that work on the facility will begin next year in the hope that the trial could actually start in 2011.

SSE also released it first half year results this week which showed an increase in profit – up from £302m last year to £410m this year. SSE said the increase in profit was down in part to an increase in gas and electricity customers and increased power generation.
